Ego can use pointless activities and "busy work" to distract you from moving forward and growing. There is a certain kind of comfort in the familiar patterns of your life. This comfort can keep you stuck even though you sense a need for growth and evolution. Nobody can resist moving forward without pain. Even after we reach enlightenment there is continued change. Nobody simply sits in meditative bliss on a mountain top for all of eternity. At some point there is change.
